I think there are ways to expand with basically just the two of us doing the
work. I see school tours as one of them. The farm, gardens, animals are in
place. A tour is schedule so as not to interfere with pickup days, I guess
you'd say its sort of "Well we're here anyway might as well give a tour".
That isn't completly accurate in that I've got to do a bit of preparation,
lesson plan, handouts, and some sort of "souvenir" I am leaning towards
sunflower seeds. Any suggestions welcome!

Glad to hear of your success Beth! You must be doing the right things.

From an advertising point of view, the school tours should help you
sign up even more members as children take home the message that
your farm produces fresh local produce, etc. Maybe not right away,
but over time they will be a booster.

As for a souvenir, sunflower seeds are okay, but you would be better
served in the long run by getting some advertising novelties which
can be had very inexpensively. I am thinking of miniature sports
type pennants, on green felt, with "Hook Family Farm" silk screened
in white. Some children will treasure their visit and become ardent
fans. I am also assuming your tour is for the elementary school grades.

An additional side benefit to the school tours may be the attraction
of dedicated future workers who light up when they see what you
do. They may want to do it too.

When you wrap up your tour, insert a line to the effect that,
"When you get older, one or two of you may want to work on
a farm or become farmers. If you do, feel free to contact us."

There is no reason a motivated teen ager cannot be put to
good use as a paid farm worker. The secret is finding the
reliable ones. This way, the reliable ones find you first.

BTW, I spent a few minutes looking for sports pennants on
ad novelty web sites and only found large ones. You may have
to contact someone to get a quote on small ones.
