- Subject: A good deal on harvest boxes?
- Date: Sun, 8 Apr 2001 07:33:02 -0400
Hi All,
I "Think" we just stepped into a good deal. Yesterday, while out scouting
for other things (chickens and rabbits) we stopped in a little out of the
way store. Out front they had a stack of heavy-duty wooden crates. After a
little haggling, we bought every one they had (About 50) for what we feel
was a good price (Less than $3/ea.).
After cleaning, painting, and branding them, we plan to use these crates
for harvest boxes as well as display boxes for the farmers market and our
on-farm stand.
Here are the questions.
1) From the look of these crates, they were old ammo crates. Are there any
chemical / health / environmental issues we should be aware of, or concerned
about from residue or anything else?
2) Other than a good power wash, and a few days out in the sunshine, what
are some good ways to clean these? (They are not bad (visually) other than
a little dust)
3) What is a good type / brand of paint or sealant to use on these?
Thanks,
Bill Carver
