Hello, King George,
    I am starting onions these weeks, and am using red wriggler worm castings and coconut shell meal, about half and half - about 12 cups of each, with a tblsp of sea kelp and about the same amount of azomite.  I had some leftover perlite, and used it until it was gone, but it isn't necessary.  I used the same mixture last year, and it worked great for the onion seedlings.  Now and then I water with diluted sea kelp mixture as well.
