Another system that I have seen - you may be aware of - is to wrap and tie off the root of the lettuce in a plastic bag, it actually works quite well and the lettuce remains firm. Less plastic used, there may be a cellophane alternative to this, I'm not sure.

Thanks for posting the PakSel info. I use their cellophane bags for
my salad greens and for basil, peas, beans and tiny summer squash. I
stress to customers that the cellophane is biodegradable. It costs
me a little more in dollars than plastic, but I don't have to suffer
from putting more and more plastic bags into the world. One of the
best field trips I ever chaperoned was to our local dump. It's in a
wooded area, and the surrounding circumference is covered with
plastic bags blown into the bushes and trees-a dramatic
representation of the future of each plastic bag we used. PakSel
does a good job, I frequently get my orders the very next day ( I do
live closer than most of you) There must be east coast suppliers of
cellophane bags too - you can at least each ask your current plastic
bag supplier to carry cellophane.
