In Growing For Market, August 2000, Amigo
Cantisano's column discussed problem of too much nitrogen in greenhouse and
field crops, depending on day length and soil temperature.....he did tissue
nitrate tests, etc....
It was a problem (the symptom being aphid
outbreaks..aphids evidently love plants high in nitrates and free amino acids,
abundant in high nitrate conditions....
one of his solutions was to cut back on preplant
organic nitrogen fertilizers and compost, eliminate side dressing and supply
extra calcium phosphorus and zinc for crps gorwing during the peak biological
activity of the year....
how this applies to winter greens in
greenhouse......he doesn't say in that article, but he can be reached at
530-292-3619 or email: orgamigo AT jps.net (he charges for
consulting)
it got me thinking and when i noticed a product in
Territorial Seeds catalog called Winter Roots organic plus fertilizer (1-8-4)
for use during LOW LIGHT winter conditions....i bought some and used it outdoors
on my greens (but since i have such terrible soil, nitrogen build up not an
issue) you might ask them more about this.....
amigo says you cannot tell visually if plants have
too much nitrates, only with nitrate meter and a
refractometer........
food for thought
