Virginia Biological Farming Conference/Trade Show, February 9 & 10, Front

Royal, VA.

The Virginia Association for Biological Farming (VABF), in conjunction
with
Virginia Cooperative Extension, will hold its annual farming conference
and
trade show on Friday, February 9 and Saturday, February 10, 2001 at the
Northern Virginia 4-H Center in Front Royal, VA.

The 2000 Virginia Biological Farming Conference offers a two-day program
with a variety of breakout sessions. The program will emphasize producing

locally grown foods, maintaining viable rural communities, and utilizing
a
deepened awareness of soil life to achieve a truly sustainable
agriculture
in the Mid-Atlantic Region.

Keynote speaker is Dr. John Ikerd, recently retired agriculture economist

with the University of Missouri. An early proponent of sustainable
agriculture and a nationally recognized and inspiring spokesperson for
the
preservation of agriculture, Ikerd's address will focus on "New Hope for
the Future of Farming."

People will create their own schedule by choosing among breakout sessions

focusing on: Improving soil fertility through nurturing earthworms, soil
microorganisms and balancing nutrients; Finding the best marketing
strategies for specialty farm products; Sustainable livestock, crop and
small fruit production; Conserving our soil and water resources; Learning

appropriate pest management techniques and fostering beneficial
insects. Emphasis will be placed on presentation of new and advanced
information with opportunities for group discussion and interaction.

The program is designed for anyone in biological and sustainable farming
to
include market gardeners; small grain and poultry farmers; farm managers;

solid waste managers; extension educators; agricultural professional and

Special activities and hands-on workshops for children of conference
participants 4 to 15 years old will center on making value-added food
products, growing plants, caring for livestock, folk dancing, collecting
aquatic insects, hiking and learning about wildlife habitat.

Pre-registration for the conference is $60 per person. Registration for
the youth program is $30 per child and $20 for each additional
child. Registration will go up to $80 for walk-ins, and you will not be
guaranteed your meals if you register after January 31st. (Price will not

be reduced for late registration, even if meals are not provided.) To
