To add to Patrick's list, there is also the IRS
factor of how fast you must either reach financial stability or absorb some of
your costs to reach that postion on your financial report that shows a
profit. Starting on a farm that once just raised feeder cattle and working
it into a Market garden incurs a lot of expenses that will have to come out of
your savings. From a taxinng standpoint, there would seem to be a way that
you could help the start-ups during their high expense phase while stopping some
of those who run farms just for tax reduction. I remember from my days in
the northeast that a lot of the larger homes in Putnam cCounty NY had a
few horses so they became a farm for property tax purposes while what they were
were palatial estates.
Since Congress responds to those who contribute and
most of us are running so close to zero net,
the big guys are constantly controlling the tax
agenda.
