"Local Food, Local Farms"
rally to focus on faith links

HINKLETOWN -- Farmers and consumers interested in supporting local
farming through direct-to-consumer marketing will meet 2 to 9 p.m.
Saturday, Feb. 17, at the New Covenant Mennonite Fellowship near
Hinkletown.

Titled "Local Food, Local Farming with Faith: Building connections and
convictions, face to face," the event will feature time to build new
relationships, hear farmer accounts of farming and faith, enjoy local
foods, and worship through story and song. Afternoon and evening
programs are open to the public without charge. Admission to the meal
will be by paid pre-registration only.

Special guest will be John Pitney, of Eugene, Ore., a Methodist
folksinger, pastor and agricultural prophet. Pitney has worked with many
farm and farmworker groups in the West, and has recorded two albums of
songs on the ethics, joys and challenges of family farming from a
Christian perspective.

Opening the day will be a "sustainable agriculture farms and product
showcase" for local farmers to display their products and marketing
approaches, consumers to visit them, and entrepreneurs to explain their
products and services.

Focus is on equipping family farms to successfully produce and sell
wholesome food directly to families, groups and regional markets. On
hand will be producers of pastured poultry, organic vegetables and
flowers, beef and lamb, and organic milk; regional processors of local
crops; supply and equipment marketers; and Community Supported
Agriculture (CSA) membership opportunities.

Later, three farmers will share how they combine faith, farming methods
and family life to build their communities. Speaking will be Roman
Stoltzfoos of Kinzer, organic dairy farmer and sustainable farming
advocate, on the importance of creating a family farm mission statement;
Peggy and David Fogarty-Harnish of Ephrata, fresh produce growers, on
Community Supported Agriculture (CSA); and Forrest Stricker of
Wernersville (Berks Co.),  pasture-based dairyman, on the cycle of grace
involving our sacrificial giving and God’s bounty.

Rev. Pitney will reflect on scripture, and recount highlights from his
leadership in the week’s series of "Local Food, Local Farms" rallies in
Harrisburg, small towns and churches in Pennsylvania and Virginia – and
even in Washington, D.C.  Sponsoring the series is Just Community Food
Systems of South Central PA (JCFS) of Gettysburg. The slide show
"Nourishment for Neighborhoods" will explain the ideas of food security
for communities, and how to build up stronger local food links.

Women of the church will serve an evening buffet (pre-registration
required) featuring locally produced foods. Rev. Pitney and musical
friends will then present a collection of stories and songs is titled
"Seeking Sabbath for the land, hope for the people."
