Robert,
One solution is to use a self venting plastic row cover. I looked for a
suitable material
for several years before finding the right one. The one we sell, and I like
best, is called
Grow-Therm. It perforated with 1/4 inch holes and vents the right amount of
heat out. I
leave it on peppers and melons nearly all season. The holes also allow for
enough water to
pass through if you are overhead irrigating. This material has been used in
Europe and
Israel for nearly 10 years now. To give you some sort of an idea of our
temps, we are at 88F
today and will get 91F tomorrow. The temperature under the plastic will reach
a max. of
around 105F. The plastic is also very strong and rip resistant. We use 9 gage
wire hoops. If
wind is a problem we tie lengths of twine at the bottom of each hoop
stretching the twine
over the top of the plastic.
