Leaving some nearby habitat specifically for insectary purposes has worked
very well for us. We have left 3-4' borders all the way around and somewhat
inside the main growing area planted to perennials and umbelliferae (sp?)
that are allowed to just be weedy year-round habitat. Only our worst weeds
like blackberries and wild morningglory are not tolerated in those areas;
anything else is nature's choice. This concept has continued to surprise us
with more and more balance of "critters" on the scene every year, to the
point where we only have to use an organic pesticide once every few years.
And that will be for aphids. Never seem to have quite enough ladybugs....but
purchasing them in the past never seemed to do much good.
