We are strong believers that hard-sided raised beds are the best in the long
run, though much more expensive in the beginning. And those seem to work
best if no wider than 42". That works the best for backs when reaching into
the center of the bed and also allows rototilling with a small tiller without
walking in the beds.

Path widths of comfortable lawnmower width work well. And we have found that
whatever you put down as mulch in those paths eventually turns to grass....so
just let ours go from the beginning and regularly mow. Those cuttings become
an important crop to us as mulch and compost. Kind of a pain to use the
string trimmer around all those raised beds. But don't have any good
alternative.

Hope that's helpful.
