We have never used flower preservatives in our own
bouquets, nor suggested it to our cut flower customers. We are considering
advising the use of a homemade preservative made from 1 tsp vinegar, 1 TBSP
sugar and 1 crushed aspirin tablet in 24 oz water (a recipe found in "The Flower
Gardener" by Lynn Byczinski). Two questions:
1. what are your experiences with this or
other flower preservatives: do they appreciably extend vase life?
2. I am not entirely clear as to whether this
is a concentrate, though it would appear that it is not.
We do advise frequent water changes. Any other vase
life extension ideas (other than varieties of flowers that naturally last a long
time)?
