Liz, our association is going on 23 years now. All products have to be grown
or produced by the vendor within a 50 mile radius of Carrboro, NC. Each
member is inspected when they are admitted and can be re-inspected at any
time thereafter. We do re-inspect 5 to 7 members each year. We do this by
appointment unless there is a concern of rules being broken. We have a 7
member board of directors who serve a 2 year term. In our upcoming annual
meeting this month we will elect 3 members. The board runs the market and
hires our managers. The rules are voted on each year at the annual meeting
and require a simple majority to pass. We have a Sat. market from the 3rd
Sat. in March until the last Sat. before Christmas. We also have a Wed.
market beginning in April til the last Wed. in Oct. We limit our bakers and
crafts to max of 15 of the 80 spaces available. In order to be a voting
member and reserve a space you have to come 17 or more Saturdays a year.
Currently we have about 70 voting members. Several members do have double
spaces. For example last year we admitted 6 new farmers only 3 got 17 or
more weeks. This is not uncommon. We do let those who do not make enough
weeks to come on a temporary status which means they have to call the
manager on a Thursday night to see if there is a open space for them on
Saturday. 99% of the time there is. This enable us to keep the products
there for the public and help grow some of our newer farmers to full
membership.
I will be glad to respond to any questions folks have about our setup.
Patrick
