I just read a bit on wikipedia about the two table types, and I think I'll try that. Is there anything special, syntax-wise, that I should know about before I try this?

You need to use innodb tables to install lyceum. if you want you can
change all the tables to myisam in /src/installation/schema.php, but i
haven't tried it like this. it should work just fine, but the application
and indexes are not optimized for myisam. shouldn't be a problem for a
smaller site (< 50 blogs).
