Ok, I'm stupid. I figured it out. What I had done is this. I untarred the install on my local machine, and then scp'd it over to the webserver. I then copied it over to the web data directory. Somewhere in there, files (likely hidden ones) got lost, and so I had a broken install right from the beginning. i'm not sure that it makes any sense, but once I actually untarred it on the server in the correct location, it worked like a charm. Thank you all for your help.

I get:

i'm using mysql 4.0.24, php 4.4.0, all on ubuntu breezy shane

The "writable by server" message is supposed to specify which directory is the problem. I've only seen it failing to include the directory in the message on windows installations. But I haven't experimented much with the moved-directory setup. (which, for a big setup serving hundreds or thousands of users such as it seems like you are doing, i would HIGHLY recommend you NOT do).

the short answer and short-term solution is, run `chmod -R 777 *` on your entire tree of lyceum files.

the longer answer is to make sure these directories are writable by the web server, as specified in Installation.txt:

src/lyceum/
src/lyceum/wp-comments-posts.php
src/lyceum/wp-content/blogs/

Let us know how that goes. I'll look into the problem more on my end.
