We
envision the Greater Southwest as a place
where farms and gardens,
kitchens and tables, stores and
restaurants are brimming with the full
diversity of aridlands-adapted heirloom
crops; people are keeping the unique seeds
and agricultural heritage alive;
and the crops, in turn, are nourishing
humankind.

April NS/S Salon: "Harvesting Hope"
With
Iskashitaa Director Barbara Eiswerth
Chances
are you or your neighbor has a citrus tree
in your backyard producing more fruit than
you can use. All over Tucson, tens of
thousands of pounds of fruits, vegetables,
nuts and even edible weeds are going to
waste. The Iskashitaa
Refugee Network identifies
harvests, distributes and preserves these
local food resources to feed families
instead of landfills.
At the next NS/S Salon, Iskashitaa founder
and director Barbara Eiswerth will
discuss multiethnic uses and harvesting tips
for local citrus, carob, dates and more. She
will also offer a deeper understanding of
refugee settlement here in Tucson and around
the world.

The Desert Gardener: What to Plant?
It’s getting closer to planting
time for high desert gardeners and others
in short-season areas. As you plan your
garden, check out these two varieties
newly available from the Native
Seeds/SEARCH collection.
Navajo
Pumpkin, a classic orange
pumpkin traditionally dry-farmed in the
Big Mountain Area of the Navajo
Reservation in northeast Arizona. Produces
medium sized round pumpkins weighing
between 6-12 pounds.
Tarahumara
Epachi Corn, a beautiful
and fast maturing popcorn variety. Lovely
pearly white kernels with occasional
lavender and purple kernels. The 5-6' tall
plants produce slender 6" ears.
Choose from these and hundreds of other
delicious, diverse varieties on
our website. Best wishes for an
abundant spring!
