You know Mitch, I have sat here for more than ten minutes thinking about that one sentence of yours and I have not worked it out completely yet. :)
One aspect that came to mind is that thanks to cheap oil there has been an overproduction of grain for a long time. This is one factor that made the flight from the land towards the city possible. Human labor was no longer needed in agriculture.
Another aspect I thought of was that here in Europe those in power seem to realise well that a populace can be kept quiet as long as you give them bread and games. Food has become slightly more expensive but most other necessities have seen much higher price rises. In October gas goes up by 22 % here. Bread price will hardly change for now.

I think it is clear that grain, and it's ability to store "wealth", has been a major factor in the development of the stratified, unjust, and contentious civilization that we have today.

A part of the issue at hand, that this article does not speak of, is that all this grain production is feeding the highest bidder, whether that is stockmen feeding cattle or speculators undercutting US wheat farmers.  Meanwhile the cattle, that can't really digest the grain, are farting like mad. Grocers who have too much bread are dumping it into the dumpster, and the very people who grow it, can't afford to buy it for dinner and are starving
