Title: Re: [Livingontheland] Back Garden Organic Poultry

Not sure what 18 euros convert to but this statement certainly doesn’t apply to Kansas.  We figure our eggs are costing us way way more than we’re charging ($3/dozen) and are considering no longer offering eggs to our CSA and just keeping enough chickens/layers for ourselves and family.  Grain prices are out of sight.  We’re considering growing our own but are at the bottom of the learning curve so to speak on that.

18 euros would be something like $23 for a bag of what exactly? (I would guess a 10 kilo bag) Years ago when I was still certified organic a 25 kilo bag of chicken food cost already 37 euros and I know that prices have gone up astronomically. And this "allowed organic food" was not organic since there was a shortage of organic feed. The only thing guaranteed was that the food was non gmo. We also had to get that food from more than 30 miles away. I found a way to feed my hens on real organic but not certified stuff but that is illegal these days. We gave up organic certification because the certification premium cost us more than what we got in through sales. And we spend about a month every year keeping the paperwork in order.
And I concur completely, we can't break even either when we look at our costs. We eat a lot of eggs here these days and so do our pigs. And they also can't be sold above cost price and so we don't sell any.
