The Christmas Truce
by David G. Stratman

Another great story is the one told I believe toward the end of the Ken Burns CIVIL WAR series: At some point, when the numbers of veterans who survived Gettysburg were dwindling ever closer to zero, somebody decided to get the old geezers together to re-enact Picket's Charge. So the Union geezers took position up on the hill, and the Confederate geezers came on across that great open field as they had on that awful day of slaughter. As they approached the breastworks, the Union veterans spontaneously broke ranks, threw down their rifles, and rushed over the works and out into the oncoming Confederates--everybody embraced, many of them weeping openly.
