Amundsen's men returned from the Pole completely fit, not even having
lost weight following their exertions. Scott's team all died--of scurvy.
Since the "essential" Vitamin C was not present in either diet, it is clear that Vit C's role in nutrition is more complicated than our fresh-fruits-and-vegetables mantra implies.

Very interesting Harvey but I think there is an explanation. Many animals can make their own vitamin C and are not depending on diet to get it. We are one of the few exceptions that can not do that. So if you eat fresh dog and seal that do make C themselves, preferably at least partly raw then you obviously can keep yourself free from scurvy.
