I like to have 2-4 free ranging hens in with my dairy goats. I think it does moderate flies (but not eliminate). The main issues are keeping them from roosting or setting in the manger (accomplished by building a cover for the hay) and finding where they are laying. I clip wings if they tend to want to roam.
