What I learned in a vermicomposting workshop here in Madison, WI, is that the worms we use in vermicomposting are usually red wigglers, which is an invasive worm species. There fast reproduction and conversion of food to compost actually causes them to crowd out native more genetically varied worms.
That the forest floors in the US are now much thinner than before, because of non-indigenous worms.
I have also heard of people worm farming with worms dug from outside in their yard....
Has anyone else heard this?
