Great article. Just to throw in some personal experience, when I was house-sitting for my daughter a couple of years ago (in her second floor apartment), I had enough tomatoes, peppers, lettuce and squash growing on her 4 x 6 foot balcony to provide fresh produce all summer long for three people. We were lucky that the balcony faced southeast, but even with a less ideal exposure we could have grown lettuce and other greens. Stuff wants to grow. Given even a minimally adequate environment, it's hard not to grow food.
