Here's a link to the article Manny Howard wrote about his attempt to feed himself for a month from his Brooklyn backyard.
He's a good example of trying to do too much, too soon.
There seems to be a plethora of writers who are making money writing of their less than exemplary experiences in raising their own food. Even though Barbara Kingsolver had more garden savvy than most, she starts her book waiting for the first asparagus in April when she could have been eating winter greens for months.
Another book that may interest some is "See You in a Hundred Years" by Logan Ward -- another NYer who tried to live as if it were 1900 (thankfully tootsie rolls were invented in 1896!).
