Cats leave our chickens alone especially after they start trying to flap their wings (4 weeks?), because the flock makes too much noise and scares the cats away. I use open-topped pens for chicks in the barn, where cats have full access.

With rats, I only have limited success using cats. The most important thing is to put all feed in metal or wire-protected places so the rats can't get at it. Some of my cats are ratters, but others are big and lazy, only catching mice. Size doesn't seem to make much difference. My smallest cat is the best rat catcher, and a constant hunter, even when there is cat food available. The largest tomcats seem to just want to fight with other cats.

Will cats go after the chickens?
