Fumes along roadways are unpleasant, but heavy metals
from tires are far more solid volume!

I think there are only depressing studies that measure
the soil contamination from microscopic tire rubber
along roadways.

The good news for gardeners is that whole tires are
still an economical and safe material since the tire
is whole and does not deteriorate EVER!

My favorite uses for old tires trimmed and screwed
into towers or barrels -
1. water-tank structures for irrigation water, with
inner liners and tubing of polyethylene;
2. rat-proof compost bins with a sheetmetal top and
bottom, rolled to the point of use after matured;
3. Filled with subsoil as a structural pillar.

Both precipitated fume particles and particles of tire
dust are permanent features in building the soil along
roads, directly proportional to the number of vehicles
that roll by, rain or shine. Testing costs lots of
money, so who's to know?

Yucky but true,
Zack

FYI street medians are fine for native ornamentals,
but food plants there would get exhaust fumes every
day.
