This is a view tainted by our later settlement activity. The people who were
met by the English settlers weren't the same people that lived on the East
Coast before disease decimated the populations. Many were as surprised to be
living there as the Europeans were to find them. The English settlements of
the 1600's and 1700's came after 200 years of exposure to smallpox and other
diseases which came up through southern contacts with the Spanish.

The people who built the mounds which are found all over N. America were gone
by the time history could do a decent job of recording their civilization.
