Jerry, as with most activity involving machinery and heavy objects, if you don't know what you're doing it's often best left to somebody who does.  At least until you learn safe operation.  Hanging a log on a stump isn't. 
 
Fortunate you didn't kill yourself.  Apparently you did know to not be where the whiplash would occur.  There's no good reason to snap a cable.  Your winch should have sheared a pin first, unless you were using cable that was overdue for replacement.  Either way, shouldn't have happened.
