If there is any chance of it being toxic to the soil or man I wouldn't want to use it though.

Art unless you are pregnant and ingest large quantities or have liver problems it shouldn't harm you at all, and growing some for use as a topical medication (salve) and as a compost ingredient would certainly be beneficial. I put a comfrey salve on my lips every night before I go to be and it really makes a huge difference (I get wicked chapped lips all the time) I also use it on my feet, hands, booboos, you name it. Comfrey is great to have around.
