Any hen will set. It is in their nature to reproduce. Most people gather
their eggs every day and take them in the house. All you have to do is let
the eggs build up in the nest and one of the hens will hop on them. They
will not waste their time on a couple of eggs. If you want to set some eggs
don't put them in the fridge and save up about a dozen. Put about half of
them in a nest one day and the other half the next day. One of the older
hens will usually hop on them within a couple of days.
This is the easiest and best way you can raise chickens. The old hen does
all the work of turning the eggs every day and keeps them at a more even
temp than you can. Most hen hatched chicks turn out more pullets than
roosters but they eat just as good. The old hen will also do a pretty good
job taking care of the baby chicks. You will need to separate the mother hen
and her chicks from the other chickens.
