Perhaps biofuels would be better batted around on ROE2 rather than Living On
The Land. My inclination to question biofuel's practicality is doubtless
colored by my convictions about building healthy soil for food. Across the
country we'll never get too much organic matter in our soil. I stick with old
Sir Albert Howard on his insistence that all available organic waste needs to
go to feed the soil that feeds us. And he didn't even anticipate the
post-Peak problems with chemical fertilizers etc. - he likely never guessed
how critical his advice would become.

We'll have some sort of fuel and electric grid going in the future at some
price, and no matter what, we'll be forced to cut way back on anything coming
from fossil fuels. Some places may find ethanol or even biogas practical
under favorable circumstances. But it's my belief that us average folks will
largely do without and have to learn to grow local, buy local, and live
local. My partner and I are on fixed incomes and now find in retirement we
can't afford to take a break with car trips around the 4 Corners area. We're
in the process of moving, garden and all, much closer to the big city (gag)
and the kids. There's such a thing as being too remote these days. I suspect
some others are coming around to the same view.
