Along these lines, I'd like to put in a (very well-deserved)
plug for Robert Waldrop's 'Better Times' Almanac, currently
in its Fifth Edition.

It is available online in its entirety. Or you can send for
the paper version, hopefully enclosing a couple of bucks for
printing and mailing costs. (Although a donation is not
required, it's certainly a good thing to do.)
This is the best guide I know for beginners and useful for
more experienced folks too.
