Hello Bert,

You got old age all wrong…  Your mass is simply spiraling to balanced perfection.  But that is another story…

Both of the figs you sent me have green figs growing on them.  One is supposed to be an LSU purple and the other an Ischia.  Maybe I have two Ischia after all.  These are the ones you started the cuttings in gel pack.

The only difference between the two figs is the size of the fruit and how many fruits there are.  Do you have a green fig that is slightly smaller, and slightly less productive than Ischia?

How will I know it is time to pick and eat a fig?  What is the best way to eat a fresh fig?  Do you only eat the pulp or do you eat the skin and all?

I plan on feeding them one more time on August 1st another 1/8th cup of 7-7-7 fertilizer.  I give them that amount monthly after they are fully out of dormancy.  They will get no more food after that so they can go to sleep comfortably for the winter in September.  I may top dress their pots with some good compost about a inch deep too.

I have found that getting them off the floor of the unheated garage about 18” does wonders for over-wintering dormancy.

You know what you need Bert for that knee Bert, a dog (smile)

Later,

Tom

Hi Tom

At last I'm back (with a new knee- darn old age)

Green Ischia aka Verte, Coeur, Verdale (Ischia is an island in By of Naples)- said to produce unusually fine figs medium size, elongated, skin green, flesh pale red, very sweet,

Another article says "small, grass-green with dark strawberry pulp. Oblate to spherical. Leaf- base broadly sub-cordate to truncate; 3 lobes. Small, fairly well closed eye, good quality but not as good as brown turkey. Matures late. Synonyms as above article

LSU Purple, Tom I have only LSU purple so if you got it from me, it must be purple. A small to medium purple fig with variable shape & flavour, introduced by E.N. O'Rourke of Louisiana State Univ. in 1991. Leaf base calcarate, 5 lobes. central lobe spatulate, side lobes latate. Said to be nematode resistant. May offer good rootstock for grafting if grower does not like the fruit. Does rebound well from winter freezing & killback --no synonyms

There is lots of confusion regarding figs. Years ago, from a magazine, I pulled a two pages of coloured, named photos  & sent it to Ray Givens in Georgia. Ray is regarded by many fig growers as Mr Fig in North America. Of approx 20 varieties displayed, Ray corrected 3.

Those seriously interested in figs- consider getting HILGARDIA, vol 23, Feb 1955, Number 11. I borrowed it from our local library- I think they located it in B.C. I photocopied same- way over 100 pages- incredible info

Hi,

Mine are Ischia and LSU (green I think).  I got them from Bert.

I am hoping he is back at his computer after being away for a while.

Later,

Tom

Tom:

Fig size depends on the variety; I have Celeste and Brown Turkey. Brown Turkey is about 2½ times the size of Celeste. When the figs are ripe they will be soft and hang down. Celeste is a blue-grey color when ripe and Brown Turkey is brown when ripe. Size as I'm sure you are aware also depends on sun, water and fertility. I've had Brown Turkey 2" to 3" high. The more sun they get the sooner they will ripen; usually late August to late September. Keep them well watered. If the tree gets stressed for water it will start dropping figs.

Hello All,

How big do figs get?  This is my first real crop.

The bulbous end is about the size of ping-pong ball, with a length from stem to outside end about the length of your thumb.  They are solid dark green in color.

So being a rookie…  What happens next and what is the time frame?

The branches are sagging under the weight of the figs.

Thanks,

Tom
