The temperature in Hawkestone is expected to exceed 24 C today (Sunday April 22 - Earth day). I am in the valley, about 5 or 6 miles north of Lake Simcoe. I have almost finished planting about 1800 of Bert Dunn's grape vine cuttings... these into the 'Monarch Company' type plant bands. They are in a heated rooting bed and now just starting to bud-swell... so I have now added some plant-light.

The indigenous, yet to be named apple and crab apple trees are starting to bud out. I pruned to two or three buds the previous years grape vines I planted from Bert Dunn and Mori Vines. They all seem to have passed through the winter. The buds on some are just slight showing some sign of swell...or it could be me just wishing...

At this time; raspberry canes, gooseberry and currants are well ahead of last years growth. The currants have started to leaf out. The herb-garden chives are plentiful and the horseradish and rhubarb are both sprouting quite well.

I may yet graph some apple scions to rootstock... time pending?

Scott

Hi,

My currants are leafing out.

My espalier crabapple against a south facing wall is leafing out. The
micro-climate on that wall is about two weeks ahead of the normal climate.

Apples that are in ground are at silver tip; some of the silver tips are
very swollen.

Grapes are still dormant, no bud swelling.

My potted rose which has been going outside when the temps are above 45F is
setting rose buds. It spent the winter in the unheated garage too, after it
went dormant.

Some Isabella grape cuttings, I stuck in sand last fall, in a pot that is
located in the unheated garage are about to burst bud.

The figs are covered with swollen, green buds. I roll them outside (keep
the pots in a wagon) on days it is over 45F and sunny, otherwise they too
are in the unheated garage. The driveway gets nice and warm.

I need to start my tomato seeds this weekend.

HURRAY!

Tom
