Hello Biz. I still have a couple quince (Chaenomeles) plants that we grew
from seed set aside for you. We also have elderberries in our collection but
our propagation schedule and facility is really full at the moment.

Hi Tom,

The variety I have is called York. I'm off to Humber Nurseries today,
enroute back up to the farm, and they have a few others in stock. I'll
likely purchase two, in case one fails. I checked it before leaving the farm
on Monday and discovered that the flowers "may" have been pollinated. I'll
have to wait and see. I will have to find out when the fruits ripen to be
sure. Right now emails take priority over searches for fruit info when it
comes to computer time.

Joe - I like your suggestion and will prune a few leaders to see what
happens. They are all growing nicely since I planted rootstock along the
trellis line between the trees and they have been getting regular irrigation
to keep them juicy for grafting.

I will also be buying some fruiting quince, since the quince A rootstock has
been quite difficult and all the initial medlar grafts have failed. The
medlar and quince scionwood in my fridge will now be grafted onto the new
quince plants ( after the have settled and had extra water ) plus the 2 and
5 years old pear trees. I'm hoping some of the grafts will take.

Has anyone had decent success with growing quince? They sell a fair number
of them at Humber - which wouldn't stock them if they couldn't handle at
least Zone 6 for Toronto. I'm thinking that with the farm in Zone 5 - it may
be just a little too cold. So, I'll plant the new quince in the nursery
which is more protected in the winter from the drying winds, and gets nice
deep snow which will help insulate. Same with the medlars.

Happy fruit and berry picking to all.
Cheers, Bizmark.

Ps I think the Pristine apples are getting close to ripe. Anyone else have
early apples that seem to be getting ripe extra early this year?

Hi Biz,

Don't some varieties of elderberry need two different varieties?

What variety is yours?

Tom
