Hi Tom
I have rooted many bull canes- I just use the regular rooting procedure.
They're, to me, mostly a nuisance due to long interval twixt nodes, thus are
more top heavy. I use them only if I need the numbers. I have used just 2
buds with the very long guys.
Some of my "friendly" competitors cut in late Oct to mid Dec. I cut many
varieties which I consider very tender in early Dec,then store them in
fridge until requested.
If you're going to cut now, wrap in damp (not quite soggy) paper, then in
several layers in plastic bags, then in fridge or your very cold cellar 'til
mid to end of March. IMO root them as you would root any cuttings.
I take cuttings, slanted at the bottom, flat on top. As I plant in rooting
beds I recut the bottom so its very close to the bottom bud. Buds do not put
forth roots, however adventious (sp?) roots appear very close to this bud.
Some large scale rooters, e.g. Alain Breault (150,000) uses no rooting
hormone, he says it a waste of time. Bottom heat, cold ambient- Tom, you
know all that.
If tenting the root bed in any way, keep a very close eye on it for white
mold (mushrooms do not hurt). I use a Windex bottle with 10% Javex in it to
spray any mold that appears

Cheers Bert
