Hi Tom,

In response to your email - I can help you out with the Ashmead's Kernel. I have one, on M.26, four years old, that should fruit next year. It was nipped by the deer so I lost a year's growth. I am also so fond of Ashmead's that I had twenty whips grafted for me on M.26, and they went in the ground this spring. Two of them even flowered. I've also learned how to become quite proficient in chip budding, since that order was placed about two years ago, and had about a 90% success rate this past summer.

I can definitely help your friend out. I'll be getting loads of rootstock next spring and can chip bud something for him early in June. It should likely have about 15to 18 inches of growth by the end of summer - perhaps a bit more if we push it a bit with some fertilizer. ( Some folks push growth really hard with the fertilizer and you get a taller whip, but I think you lose something in the overall strength of the tree going into it's first winter. ) I did give the tongue and whip style of grafting a try, but was off on the angles. No surprise, since my family razzes me at my efforts to cut bread ...

The Pixie Crunch presents a problem. I don't know of anyone in Canada who has it in their orchards. Yet. I'd love to get some, but so far I think it's only in the US. Perhaps Margie can help us out with it's whereabouts. I'll put out a few feelers, though. I've been discovering varieties out west that few of us in Ontario seem to have.

Have your friend give me a shout if he's interested. I've put together the initial stages of a website in time for the recent magazine article. There's still lots more info to add, so the next few months will be busy.

Hey Bert, thanks for the nice comments about the article in a recent post. Too bad the photo makes me look like a mad scientist. I've been away in Michigan and returned to find tons of emails and postings to read through. Almost caught up. More about the Michigan trip in another post - likely next week.

Cheers, Bizmark.

Hi,

Our resident apple expert is Biz. Have you looked at the inventory of the
Genebank?

You could order scions from the Genebank (or any other source), and have
Woodwinds do some custom grafting for you (if you do not graft).

In doing a very quick scan, with my less than perfect eyes, it does not
show either apple in the Genebank inventory.

Hopefully, someone else will know about Ashmead's Kernel and Pixie Crunch
in Canada.

Later,
Tom

Hi Tom,

Finally got around to joining your list - busy time of year! (Glad I am
not a farmer)

You have helped me in the past and I was hoping you might be able to
steer me to a source for:

Ashmead's Kernel and Pixie Crunch.

Bill And Derry's in BC may have Asmead's. Nothing from Woodwind's or
Siloam in Ont. Pixie Cr is almost unknown. Bill can prepare one (AK) for
me for the fall of 2006, but I don't want to loose another year.

Do you know of any other sources - whips, trees or scions?

Cheers!

jb
