Hi there,

I can only answer that with the way that I learned from Shelly at Woodwinds. It is best to wait until the rootstock has leafed out, which indicates that it has completely cleared dormancy, or, put another way, that all it's systems are actively functioning. This allows it to effectively reseal the cambium layer and accept the graft. ( If it is properly grafted. ) You also want to avoid frost or too cold nights, which again causes some healing issues. If it's too soon, or to late, the process is hindered, and why waste your time and sometimes precious budwood. You're looking at well into May, after frost danger is past, and through until August. Weather permitting, you can sometimes sneak into September, with the help of a good Indian summer. Another factor is making sure that the rootstock is well irrigated, so it has the necessary moisture to help to quickly seal the graft.
I'm going to be using parafilm to wrap the grafts, completely covering the bud, then either overwrapping with plastic tape, for two weeks, or coating with Lac Balsam. Evidentally, the parafilm breaks down in sunlight. Would love to compare notes with how others proceed with their grafts.

Hope this helps. Cheers, Bizmark.

Subject: [OFEX] Grafting Dormancy?

Hello all,

Is anyone clear on grafting in regards to rootstock dormancy? My basic question is; When is the correct time to graft?

All the literature states that the rootstock needs to have broken dormancy, and be actively growing. However, does that mean the buds have begun to open (mid/late-april) or the leaves are totally developed (may)?

I have never been clear on this.

Thanks,
Tom
