Hi,

Then I cleared the trunk of weeds, and some of the nettling blackberries and examined how bad the wound was.

It was better than first inspection. There was one 2" strip of intact bark, a large gap, another 1" intact bark, a large gap, and then a 1/4" strip of intact bark. So there are three points around the tree that were not girdled. However, about 60% had been girdled. I am glad to have 40% intact.

I dug a hole beside the tree and planted 3 apple seedlings. Since this was a standard tree, any apple seedling would do.

My concern was that I would have trouble with roots, but I did not run into any roots until I was 8" down. This was plenty of depth to plant three seedlings.

Once the seedlings were in, I tied the whips to the main trunk, but I cannot inarch graft until the bark starts to slip in May.

So now it is a waiting game for about a month. I wrapped the whole thing in chicken wire to keep rabbits away.

I will post a picture of the final graft in May. Will try to find a better camera for close ups.

Later,
Tom
