I agree with Micheal's philosophy, but have just switched from Quickbooks to Xero, which my new accountant uses. It's less expensive than Quickbooks and looks like it will do everything I need it to do. I wanted the easiest, most affordable solution that kept everything legal.

Any more you'd "save" from open source would be quickly eaten up in time and aggravation.
