Hi Folks,

Thanks much for the suggestions!

I thought about the hibernate or sleep option, but we have a mix of machines
and not all of them come out of sleep or hibernate gracefully. When I read
your responses, however, it dawned on me that I do need to know the power
options on every machine in order to know the conditions under which every
machine may have been set to sleep or hibernate. If someone’s machine
hibernates after 60 minutes of inactivity, then I think that that is the
state that the machine will be in when they unlock it in the morning, and
they will need to know that.

Coleen: I second Cristóbal's observation above. Depending on which OS
and version you have, you likely have the option to hibernate, suspend,
standby, and/or sleep on each machine. If you use one of these options,
you will save most of the power of a shutdown, but the machines will
restart much faster.

In overly general terms, standby and suspend are low-power states that
consume much less power, but do not turn the machine fully off.

Hibernate turns the power fully off, but saves the state of your
applications to disk first. When you power back up, the computer
bypasses the usual OS boot and reloads the saved state from where it was
suspended. This takes a little longer but saves more energy.

"Sleep" is harder to quantify, since it has been used for different
purposes on different operating systems. Most descriptions make it
sound similar to standby or suspend.

I recommend giving the available options a try on the various systems
involved, you can save power and reduce bootup waiting.
