Why would anyone want one if they have good reception? Is it somehow cheaper than using up mobile phone minutes?

The wifi devices are different beasts entirely.

The femtocells are for use if you don't have good cell radio reception, but do have a good internet connection. Basements, metal buildings, dead spots, etc. You can already provide your own wifi for data service to most handsets in these locations, but that doesn't help for cellular voice service.

Voice reliability at the home location might be the difference between cutting the landline or not. 3G support is just a bonus, albeit one that I'm not sure a cell radio repeater supports.

Voice minutes through the femtocell device will likely bill just as minutes to a cell tower.

If you think too much about this it's tempting to dismiss it, just based on the annoying fact that you're being asked to pay extra to patch up holes in the provider's crappy network. But if everything is working for you except that one spot where you spend a lot of time...
