About the Digital Library and the Applications Analyst position:

The Carolina Digital Library (CDL) serves to develop, create, manage, preserve, and provide access to digital collections held or managed by the University Library. It consists of four main functional areas: user consultation, digital production services, digital publishing services, and the institutional repository. Taken together, these four areas provide UNC faculty, students, and staff with the expertise and capability to assess and meet their needs for digital collection services. The CDL works closely with Library collection and systems staff, as well as other technological and collection units across the campus to ensure the effective and efficient delivery of digital collection services.

The Institutional Repository Applications Analyst works in collaboration with the other members of the Digital Library Technology Research and Development Group to develop new solutions for the digital library and institutional repository. The person in this position will participate in the full life cycle of application development, from design through implementation and support. The Institutional Repository Applications Analyst researches new technologies and techniques and their application to the CDL. This position plans, implements and tests software upgrades and enhancements, working with system and database administration staff as necessary. The Institutional Repository Applications Analyst coordinates and assists with user acceptance testing. This position works collaboratively with other library staff and with campus partners and vendors to develop and implement innovative solutions for creating and managing new digital collections; participates in planning and policy-making around digital initiatives, including definition of standards and best practices for creation and preservation of digital assets. This position requires a thorough understanding of and familiarity with relational databases, a strong grasp of object-oriented programming and design, and an understanding of WWW programming, including protocols like HTTP and markup languages. The Institutional Repository Applications Analyst should have experience with Java, especially servlet programming and XML processing, SQL, and at least one other language such as C/C++, Ruby, Python, PHP, or Perl.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with XSLT, MySQL, TEI, XML databases, information retrieval software (especially Lucene) institutional repository software, Tomcat, metadata standards such as METS and MODS, and the Text Encoding; Initiative will be considered a plus. Should be comfortable working in Linux and able to administer a Linux workstation. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, especially ability to analyze functional requirements for proposed digital projects, identify appropriate technologies to meet those requirements and develop/adapt these technologies for local use. Ability to work well independently and to participate effectively in cross-functional teams.
