Aren't maps and large printed documents typically kept in tubes?

I said it might have a Coast Guard symbol stamped in it but now I think it
was a Navy symbol (doing GIS to try to find it). It was made of aliuminum,
is hollow (the open end is on the ground) and even had a couple bullet holes
through it. Judging by the amount of barnucles attached to the outside and
the number of bivalves on the inside I'd say it was out to sea for a while.
It was stamped with some other characters but google searches turned up
nothing. It stands about 2 feet tall or so.
Any ideas?
Greg
