Correct, you can make it work without service and be nagged. OR, you can
find a machine that carries Tivo 'Basic' service and have it both ways.
I have a Toshiba combo tivo/dvd player, and it allows this service. It's
free, but only carries 3 days of programming info, no special features
-- if you know what you want to record it works exactly as a digital vcr
though. And, when Tivo goes out of business (blasphemy!) it should still
work as an appliance.

The hard part is finding one -- I'd recommend searching pvrblog.com as
Steve mentioned or a shopping site for 'tivo basic' and see what you
come up with. The device I have was purchased over almost 2 years ago,
so it's probably not widely available anymore. It was cheap though, I
think I paid about $125 at best buy.

I may be wrong, but I believe the TiVo and ReplayTV will work without
the
service--you would be forced to program them manually, however. I
believe
what you are paying for is the convenience of automated programming of
shows
to record.

I think I saw some combo hard drive/DVD recorder at Costco starting at
about
$200.
