I used:

For years. Unfortunately he seems to have dropped plans to go to a
version 3 much to my chagrin. NewsShark was well worth the
registration money. It's not a newsreader but it definitely can pull
down whatever you want from a newsgroup quickly.
I had found a more recent and free newsgroup binary downloader, but
the name escapes me. That's a shame because it was relatively
feature-rich for a free program.
Maybe it was called newzminer?
