It's been a while since I've read this book but Kiss the Girls is
about a serial killer and it all somehow involves Chapel Hill. The
book was made into movie and Morgan Freeman played The Disgrunted Cop
from DC who gets involved. In the movie Morgan can be seen driving
down Hwy 147 right past the South Expansion building where I used to
work.
Anyway, here is a link for the book

This is a bigger stretch but the Appalachian Trial runs through NC.
There are a number of good books written with the AT as backdrop (just
avoid A Walk in the Woods by Bryson; it is doubtful he ever set foot
on the AT to being with).
Also do a seach for "Graveyard of the Atlantic" or even "Virginia
Dare" (the first european born in the US - on Manteo island.. or
somewhere out there). I am sure you can find a book about her,
Manteo, or Wanchese (the two native americans who went to europe for a
visit) or any of the other missing first settlers (the ones that
scawled "Croatan" into a tree and then vanishing into thin air).
