Sounds like you may have your problem solved, but I wanted to weigh in with a little advice that plastic is handled a bit differently over there, in my experience. Nobody really checks your signature against your card in the US, right? Especially in a restaurant, you just sign the slip and walk. I found in London that the clerks really looked closely at the card to compare the signature. Before I realized what a big deal it was, I got chased out the door of a restaurant by a waitress who was very upset with me for leaving before she had an opportunity to compare my signed receipt with my credit card. So in other words, it needs to be your son's signature on the card. Not that it wouldn't be, but you mentioned giving him YOUR card, and that could potentially be problematic.

for your amusement. Shea's suggestion to buy a limited debit Visa from AAA looked like the best way to help a 12 year old manage money in the UK. So we went out to AAA and bought one and loaded it with the minimum $. then headed home to activate it. when we got home we had a call from AA saying that something was a little wrong and to call them tomorrow. we went ahead and tried the activation and found out the problem. it uses your birth date as one of the keys. you must be at least 13 to be activated... i think we'll have a work around tomorrow.
thanks to everyone for replying and being so helpful.
