I think Intel was feeling the pinch and got RDF'ed into making an offer too good to pass up. I also have a hunch that someone at Apple overplayed their hand with IBM, and didn't realize the difference between volume (macintosh sales), and VOLUME (PS3 and XBox 360).
I wonder if IBM demanded naming rights for those machines as part of the deal?

p.s.
My side project for the past few weeks or so has been working on an optimized messsage dispatch sequence for objective-c. One approach depended entirely on having an altivec; the other based around self modifying code that could avoid cache and multi processor consistency checks. Guess how much of that is relevant on x86. Grrrr.
