This happened prior to the last election as far as I know.

No, it happened last week.

The (cough) minister in question had stated that anyone who didn't support Bush in November should get churched, but he stated this as a reflection, not a mandate contemporary to the election itself. According to a couple of church members, he had started including endorsements of Bush in his sermons as early as September of last year and my absolutely uninformed guess would be that he got in a fight with the deacons all the way back then (two deacons were among those he churched for their "dissent") that finally boiled over just now. However, to be perfectly clear, the events in question are current events, not old news. His stated policy when this happened was that anyone in the church who had voted for Kerry (not who planned to vote for Kerry) should resign or publicly repent.

Apparently he'd taken care of all the important stuff and really started digging down into that "To Do" list. All the other local churches are just jealous his church managed to work its way past "heal all spiritual and emotional wounds of flock" and "approach the perfection of Christ through sincere repentance and a renewed heart," (and even "have a bake sale without inspiring small traumas and large dramas") and get all the way down to "church Democrats for lack of anything better to do."
